Power Profile: Todd And
February 22, 2008

To kick start my next 500 posts, I thought I’d profile myself, author of Todd And, which sits at No. 115 on the Power 150 (02/21/08). It’s been almost a year and a half since I started blogging and I don’t talk about myself much on this thing, so why not?
The photo was taken at 5 p.m. this afternoon while my colleague demonstrated his Ricoh Caplio GX100 camera. As you can see, I’m listening intently… and now I want one. Here is my Power Profile:
What blogs do you read most often?
I imported the OPML file of the Power 150 into my Google Reader so I just read the entire river of news from all 575 marketing and media bloggers. When I’m not browsing them all, I tend to read Matt Dickman, David Airey, Kami Huyse, Neatorama, Boing Boing, Techcrunch and the rest of my blog roll.
THE Q&A WITH MYSELF CONTINUES -
What podcasts do you listen to most often?
I used to love, love, love Diggnation, but I haven’t watched an episode in months.
If blogging didn’t exist, how would you be spending all your free time?
Reading more books, watching TV, collecting historic newspaper, making videos with my nine-month-old daughter
What other websites and publications do you read?
I read cnn.com, drudgereport.com, politico.com, tmz.com, adage.com, businessweek.com, all the local Chicago newspaper sites and lots of my industry trades.
Last good movie you saw at the theater?
Juno
Last good song you downloaded?
Paper Aeroplane by Angus & Julia Stone
What music do you recommend?
Martin Sexton (Contemporary Folk) - Check out the albums Black Sheep, The American and Live Wide Open
Pink Martini (World) - Check out the entire album Sympathique
Morcheeba (Electronica, Downtempo, Etc.) - Check out the albums Big Calm, Fragments of Freedom and Who Can You Trust?
Hooverphonic (Rock, Pop, Trip Hop) - Check out the songs Mad About You and 2 Wicky
Massive Attack (Trip Hop) - Check out the albums Blue Lines, Protection and Mezzanine
Finley Quaye (R&B, Rock, Reggae) - Check out the song Dice and the entire album Maverick a Strike
Sneaker Pimps (Electronica, Trip Hop, Pop) - Check out the album Becoming X and the songs 6 Underground and Spin Spin Sugar
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (World - Pakistani) - Check out the Mustt Mustt album and song
Faithless (Electronica, Dance) - Check out their greatest hits or the albums Reverence and Sunday8pm
Portishead (Electronica) - Check out the Dummy and Roseland, NYC Live albums
What kind of computer/set-up do you run at home?
I’m running a pimped out Gateway with an AMD Athlon Dual Core, 2.21 GHz, 4 GB of RAM, upgraded video card, 24″ flat panel, and XP to boot. I’m surrounded by a mess of USB and firewire cords.
Favorite food to eat while you blog?
Recently, it has been Girl Scout cookies. The chocolate and peanut butter kind.
What is your favorite blog plugin?
I like similar posts a lot.
Tell us something interesting about yourself that your readers don’t already know.
Back in 2000, my wife and I (then engaged) were featured in Glamour magazine. We were flown out to NYC for an all-expense-paid weekend (thanks again Conde Nast) We had a professional photo shoot with make-up artists and designer clothing (not for keep).
What famous person do you most look like?
In high school, people said I looked like the Encyclopaedia Britannica kid (minus the mullet). In college, I got Val Kilmer a lot (mostly because we shared the same wildly tall hair). These days, I have no idea.
Have you posted any videos on YouTube? Can we see?
I created a series of three videos for The Mitchell Archives, a firm specializing in the sale and preservation of original historic newspapers dating as far back as the 1600s.
What was your first job in high school, college or earlier?
I bagged groceries at Jewel. “Stack the walls, build the base, fill the rest.” You’ve officially been trained.
Do you collect anything? What? Why?
I collect original historic newspapers. With old newspapers, you’re reading the first drafts of history. I’m talking about the newspapers that reported about actual pirates in the Caribbean, the plague in London, the Boston Tea Party, the pivotal battles of the American Revolution and Civil War, George Washington crossing the Delaware River, the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, the Wright Brothers’ first flight, the great Chicago fire, the gun fights of the wild west. And, even better, pre-1870 newspaper was printed on durable rag linen, so papers from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries are in better condition than yesterday’s USA Today.
What is your most embarrassing email moment?
MSN actually covered my most embarrassing email moment in a “tech and gadgets” article (my story is on page two).
What would you do with $3 million dollars?
I’d invest at least half with an aggressive asset allocation that included mostly index funds, foreign markets and commercial real estate. I’d pay off the car, pre-pay for my daughter’s college via College Illinois, wait for the housing market to improve and then sell this house and move to one closer to our jobs. I’d probably also give $20,000 increments to a few friends and family. Oh, and I’d take regular vacations to Salzburg and Prague.
What’s the next big thing?
President Obama

I heard you went through some back channels to wrangle that interview. Way to stick with it, Todd!
Thanks, Daniel. It definitely took some convincing, but I’m glad I came around.
Congratulations on reaching the 500 post milestone and revealing a little more about you in this profile.
Yeah, I can still see you’ve got the Val Kilmer doppleganger thing going on.
Thanks for stopping by, Mark. Great word choice - doppleganger!
