How would you describe your blog to your mom?
Online Marketing Blog is a place where I get to write about the industry we work in and the things that are important to the kinds of companies we do business with. Our blog gives potential customers a glimpse at how we approach internet marketing and why we’re a leader in our category.

What blog post (of your own) are you most proud of and why?
Usually it’s the last past made that I’m most proud of – at least until I put up another. As of the time of this profile, the most recent post is:
Evaluating Client Search Marketing Readiness

I like the post because it provides real insight into what large companies that need search engine optimization services should consider before hiring an agency. Within the blogosphere there’s a lot of heresy, speculation and fact-less based fluff. Online Marketing Blog publishes information based on practical, actual experience - what works and what doesn’t.

What blog post do you most regret publishing and why?
I don’t think I have one that I regret.

What two blogs do you read most often?
Just two? SearchEngineLand.com and blog.searchenginewatch.com.

Which blogger would you most like to meet in person?
Steve Rubel or John Jantsch

Which blogger would you least like to run into in a dark alley?
Tamar Weinberg. She’s dangerous with a keyboard.

THE POWER PROFILE WITH LEE ODDEN CONTINUES:

How many hours a week do you spend blogging?
About 10 hours blogging but another 5-6 hours promoting the posts I’ve blogged.

How long do you expect to continue blogging? What’s your end game?
I’ll keep blogging until we get to a point where our senior account managers or a dedicated blogger takes over. However, I’ll still be blogging in one way or another because it’s something I’ve come to enjoy.

What non-blog websites and publications do you read?
In print I like Fast Company, Wired, Esquire, Fortune, Star Tribune and New York Times.

Have you launched anything viral? Results?
We’ve had several viral promotions that have resulted in hundreds of thousands of links to our blog. We currently hover around 500,000 unique inbound links to www.toprankblog.com

One is a list of blog directories with the submission URLs. That gets the most traffic right now:
http://www.toprankblog.com/rss-blog-directories/

Another is a social bookmarking tool that makes it easy to add bookmark/sharing links to blogs or web pages:
http://www.toprankblog.com/tools/social-bookmarks/

What kind of computer/set-up do you run at home?
A tiny Sony Vaio notebook hooked up to a 24” flat panel Samsung monitor and a Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse.

What one thing would you change about your blog if you had the time?

Consider more seriously changing the design of Online Marketing Blog to allow for creative ad space for all those requests we keep getting every week. Companies looking to reach the search marketing community really, really seem to want to advertise with us. But right now we don’t offer ads.

What other hobbies do you have?
Photography, travel, cooking and poker.

Tell us something interesting about yourself that your readers don’t already know.
I feel guilty if I don’t get at least one blog post out every day but I feel even more guilty if I don’t spend enough time with my kids. Guess who wins that contest?

What is your full-time job?
This is my full time job. Actually, I’m the CEO of TopRank Online Marketing, a search marketing agency.

What cool/interesting clients or companies have you worked for?
I started out doing web development and/or online marketing for companies like Supervalu, Toro and the U.S. Veteran’s Administration.

With TopRank, we’ve done some interesting things with startups like smart-kit.com where the owner has been very open to a holistic site promotion strategy leveraging search engine optimization, online public relations and marketing through social media. TopRank also works with progressive marketers at very large companies like NWA, McKesson and HP.

How do you think newspapers will evolve over the next 15 years?
The giant sucking sound of ad revenues going online will be all over in 15 years.

What is the greatest threat facing the PR industry?
I think the biggest threat facing the public relations industry is the tendency to not change with the times. There’s a strong need right now to adapt to both new technology and the way people use that technology to consume information, interact with each other and engage their favorite brands.

Have you posted any videos on YouTube, Google, etc.? Can we see?
Sure, we have a modest channel at YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/user/toprankresults

What kind of car do you drive? What’s the next car going to be?

Right now I have silver Chrysler 300C but I am seriously considering a Brilliant Black Audi A8 L.

Tell us about your 15 seconds of fame.

Fifteen seconds is about right. A few weeks ago at the SES San Jose conference I was interviewed by a silicon valley TV station, NBC11. It ran that night but I didn’t see it. I didn’t even know it aired until several people approached me the next morning offering congratulations.

All I have is this screenshot: http://tinyurl.com/38qrfv

How has the Power 150 helped you/your blog?
The Power 150 list as well as the AdAge version send a steady stream of new visitors to our blog and I am very greatful for the opportunity to be included. We’ve consistently ranked in the top ten of the Power 150 and that visibility has brought important credibility to our blog and our business. Thanks Todd!

What would you do with $3 million dollars?
Pay taxes, pay off the house, set aside money for the kids’ school and college and then split the rest between donations to charities which my 3 kids and wife would help select.

What’s the next big thing?
Hopefully the next big thing is a green friendly economy and a sustainable environment with abatement of global warming.

I remember a press release coming out from xTrain where they mention all kinds of training for the typical kind of stuff you get in online training like web design and programming and graphics. But I was digging through the classes they offer and not only do the have classes on online marketing but they actually have social media classes. Can you recommend other places where I can find these kinds of classes on social media.

Has anyone out there heard about WideCircles.com. It seems like a way better service then wasting money on PPC. Apparently they are using refering websites ( forums, blogs, wiki, etc. ) and have a viral word of mouth distributed approach to it. My friend told me he got around 100 visits from single post which cost him $0.40c. I am going to give them a try today . In case you are intrested here is it. http://widecircles.com?s=imt1

Got something to say?
