My New Web 2.0 Car
August 31, 2007 | 2 Comments
I just bought the quintessential Web 2.0 car - the 2007 Honda CR-V. Like Web 2.0 companies and their logos, the CR-V name has no vowels, is brightly colored (blue), has rounded edges and, wow, what a reflection. Plus, I added the essential Web 2.0 beta starburst. Check it out…

The Logo Evolution of Todd And
August 29, 2007 | 5 Comments
If you haven’t noticed, I’ve been testing new logo designs to better complement the latest theme for this blog (Revolution by Brian Gardner). To help build my design cred, I’ve said ’so long’ to the legos and focused on a cleaner, more sophisticated and elegant logo - something that matches the theme’s look and feel. The concept for the current logo version originated from a conversation and brainstorm with David Airey, my favorite design blogger. Then, yesterday, I shared my logo evolution with Gil Perez, a gifted designer and photographer. Thanks to David’s original ideas and Gil’s added value (and a pinch of my opinion), I’m very happy with the final product that sits in the upper left corner of this page. For a quick history lesson, below is the Todd And logo evolution from July 14, 2006 through August 29, 2007.

Decades before the Web 2.0 logo craze, we had the logos of traditional media. Here is a video compilation of TV logo signoffs.

An Inside Look at 37signals
August 27, 2007 | Leave a Comment
Crain’s Chicago Business interviewed Jason Fried, founder and president of 37signals, a company that designs web-based software for individuals and businesses. Jeff Bezos of Amazon is the only outside investor of the company, which has more 1 million people using its products - products like Highrise (CRM), Basecamp (project management), Campfire (instant messaging) and Backpack (calendar/organizer). Highrise appears to be the perfect app for media relations specialists at PR agencies - a better way to manage journalist contacts.
In his video interview, Jason shares some behind-the-scenes perspectives on the firm’s leadership and management styles, discussing how they avoid structure, how interruption is the enemy of productivity, the secret to competing and more. Check it out.
And while you’re spending time with 37signals, take stroll through the company’s blog. I love the contextual advertising post that shows an ad for a dog walker tacked to a tree (see below). Nice one.

Todd And 3.0: Revolution
August 27, 2007 | 8 Comments
I’ve officially launched the next generation of Todd And with the awesome new theme by Brian Gardner - Revolution. I had the opportunity to chat with Brian last night and he was extremely helpful with my integration of the theme. Turns out we live just a few towns away. Small world.
A few weeks ago I revamped the logo with counsel from David Airey. The theme switch took place last night courtesy of Brian. Over the next few weeks, I’ll continue modifying and tweaking. Stay tuned.

This is a great video that demonstrates the power that is steampunk. The computer era has seen a resurgence of the Steampunk Age. Nostalgia meets the future with more than computers though - there are steampunk lightsabers, artificial limbs, external hard drives, whatchamacallits and more.

I love the description that came with this video: “Early on, Charles made a deal with God: to be a Hall-of-Fame basketball player, but in exchange to be severely handicapped in a sport that requires much, much less athletic ability.”

The Internet is Dead and Boring?
August 24, 2007 | 1 Comment

“The internet is ‘dead and boring,’ Mark Cuban says in an interview with Portfolio.com. ‘We have reached the point of diminishing returns with today’s internet. The speed of broadband to your home won’t increase much more in the next five years than it has in the last five years. That is not enough to work as a platform for new levels of applications that will require much, much higher levels of bandwidth.’”
