MyShelves: A Look at My Books

May 6, 2007

Thought I’d start the week off with something completely different - a glimpse at what sits on my shelves. Above is a photo of the home office bookshelves (love the Ikea) directly adjacent to my desk (that’s my dog Wrigley sleeping on the couch). And below are a few books you’d find if you were snooping around while visiting me.

Lincoln The Unknown by Dale Carnegie
Originally written in 1932, Dale Carnegie’s biography on Lincoln is full of rare stories and facts. An old Weber Shandwick colleague recommended this biography when I was studying Lincoln for an MBA course on leadership. He said it had many stories that he hadn’t read anywhere else. It’s one of the few biographies I’ve ever read.

One More Time: The Best of Mike Royko by Mike Royko
One of my favorite Mike Royko quotes that can be easily applied to the blogosphere - “It’s been my policy to view the Internet not as an ‘information highway,’ but as an electronic asylum filled with babbling loonies.” Royko is arguably the greatest newspaper columnist in Chicago history and wrote for three city papers, including the Tribune and Sun-Times. He passed away in 1997.

Commies, Crooks, Gypsies, Spooks & Poets by Jan Novak
According to Amazon.com’s editorial description, “Jan Novak took his family to Prague for a year, and one of the results is this delightful book. Novak touches on Prague lore (the Jewish golem, the clockmaker whose eyes were poked out by a jealous king), Prague history (including the Velvet Revolution martyr who didn’t exist), and the Prague of 1992, where an encounter with a pickpocket on Charles Bridge marks the moment they stop being tourists and Prague becomes home.”

Common Sense on Mutual Funds by John Bogle
Before blogging, personal finance was my hobby. This is one of the books I found during long nights scouring the finance shelves at Barnes & Noble. For about three years, I was one of the “Bogleheads” sharing insight and recommendations about passive investing in the famed “Vanguard Diehards” forum on Morningstar.com.

Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris
A friend I studied with in Salzburg passed this book along to me when I visited him in NYC several years ago. I’ve only read the first few chapters, but it remains on my “need to read that one day” list.

The Book of Rule by Publisher Dorling Kindersley (DK)
I’m no expert, but I’ve always had an interest in politics. DK publishes my favorite travel books, so I was thrilled to find a DK-published book on “how the world is governed.” The back of the hardcover has a great quote by Jefferson Davis - “Neither current events nor history show that the majority rule, or ever did rule.” Most importantly, I like this book for the colorful charts and glossy photos.

House Smarts by Lou Manfredini
I’ve changed a kitchen faucet, hung shelves, wired light switches, electrocuted myself a dozen times and relit furnace pilot lights, but I’m definitely not what you would call handy around the house. This book, and a few others like it, have helped me become a bit more manly when it comes to DIY.

Excellence in Advertising edited by Leslie Butterfield
This book and the one below were my text books for my branding class last semester. I enjoyed reading them because they both had multiple expert authors with unique, sometimes contradictory perspectives on advertising and branding.

Brand New Brand Thinking edited by Merry Baskin and Mark Earls
See above.

Anyone else want to give a peak at their bookshelves? Perhaps Leo B. Bloggin’, Kamichat, Clay J., Punky Drewster, CB, D+avid Arm+ano and The Juice?

Well, what you don’t see in the photo is the desk (off to the left) that is full of papers, bills and CDs. Not pretty.

You’ve got a lovely photo of your books.

Nice couch! And Royko’s always a good choice.

Internet marketing is business, not just search engine algorithms…

I find it amusing that the Internet marketing industry is so preoccupied with search engine algorithms (which, admittedly, are an important part of the online marketing world), but rarely give even lip service to other areas of business….
