Oprah’s Leadership Academy - South Africa
February 27, 2007 | Leave a Comment
Wow! I don’t know if you caught last night’s Oprah special about her new leadership academy in South Africa, but it was one of the most moving television programs I’ve ever watched. Just take five minutes to watch this video - a series of short clips introducing five of the South African school girls (click on the top video and it will play through all of them automatically).
My words won’t come close to describing their living conditions and daily routines. They are surrounded by extreme poverty and misfortune, yet they exude great confidence, strength and optimism. “We’re fighting to have a name in this world,” one girl, Lesego, said.
The full-length special was very moving and I highly recommend it for all. Click here to order a copy of the DVD.

Music Video History Lessons

Is it just me or does this guy look like a cross between John Mayer, Mick Jagger and INXS’s Michael Hutchence? Not to mention a voice (and a look) straight out of the 80s.
Speaking of the 80s, check out Gnarls Barkley’s music history mockumentary that spans several decades.

Media Interviewing Perspective From Frank Zappa
February 27, 2007 | 1 Comment
PR folks and media trainers will find this amusing… Frank Zappa’s perspective on media interviews and image. As Frank points out, it’s not performance, it’s an accommodation. “Being interviewed is one of the most abnormal things… it’s two steps removed from the inquisition,” he said.

There are a lot of PS3 haters out there after Sony over promised, over priced and under delivered. This video is a great example of why you don’t mess with gamers.
Speaking of which… did you hear that video killed the radio star?

Open Pandora’s Music Box
February 21, 2007 | 4 Comments
I’ve written about music recommendation engines before - LivePlasma, Last.fm and Musicovery - and just found another great one - Pandora. Pandora allows you to create custom “radio stations” based on your favorite artists or songs. Then, as you browse your station, Pandora explains why it recommends each new track… “because it features mellow rock instrumentation, acoustic sonority, major key tonality, acoustic rhythm guitars…”
As new songs are recommended by Pandora, you can give it a thumbs up or thumbs down, skip ahead or back, get more information about the artist/song/album, buy the song on iTunes or the album on Amazon, etc.
