The Power 150 - America’s Top Marketing Blogs
January 11, 2007
Today, I am unveiling the Power 150, a ranking of the top marketing blogs in America and my attempt to add a sliver of value within the massive marketing blogosphere. As the author of my own marketing blog, I’ve developed a great appreciation for my fellow marketing bloggers and their content. As a PR guy, I understand the perceived value of lists and rankings. The Power 150 provides a stable, unbiased ranking foundation with a pinch of subjective measure for creativity.
To calculate each blog’s final ranking in the Power 150, a very simple, multimetric algorithm was used. Final ranking is based on the sum of four unique and mostly objective sources:
Google PageRank (0 to 10) – Google PageRank is a link analysis algorithm that interprets web links and assigns a numerical weighting (0 to 10) to each site. High-quality sites receive a higher PageRank. The actual PageRank number was used in the Power 150 ranking algorithm.
Bloglines Subscribers (1 to 20) – Bloglines displays the amount of feed subscribers. Subscriber ranges were determined (i.e., more than 20, more than 30, etc.) and each range was assigned a number (1 to 20) that was used in the Power 150 algorithm.
Technorati Ranking (1 to 30) – Technorati ranking analyzes the number of sites pointing to a particular blog. The more link sources referencing your blog, the higher the Technorati ranking. Similar to the Bloglines Subscribers value, Technorati ranking ranges were determines (i.e., top 9,000, top 10,000, top 20,000, etc.) and each range was assigned a number (1 to 30) that was used in the Power 150 algorithm.
Todd And Points (1 to 15) – As the only subjective measure in the Power 150 algorithm, 1 to 15 opinion points were assigned to each blog. Todd And values frequent, relevant, creative and high-quality content. The use of audio, video and graphics is also heavily weighted in the Todd And Points.
All four metrics were added to determine each blog’s total score. The total score carried the most weight in assigning the final Power 150 rank. If blogs shared the same final Power 150 rank, the suborder was determined by Todd And points. If Todd And points were the same, Technorati ranking points were compared – then Bloglines subscriber points and finally Google PageRank points.
It’s important to note that these rankings reflect a snapshot in time as these metrics will change; however, most of the blogs measured are well-established and don’t see major fluctuations in Google PageRank, Technorati Ranking and, to some extent, the Bloglines subscribers. Ranking updates will happen sporadically – when I have time.
As much as I wanted to include all English-language blogs, the ranking includes only USA-based marketing-related blogs. Since I am the only one who worked on this and my eyes hurt after staring at this stuff for long periods, it is very likely that mistakes exist or blogs from outside the USA slipped in. [UPDATE 03/19/07: The Power 150 is now automated with daily updates thanks to TechBrew. As such, the ranking is now open globally to all English-language marketing blogs.] In either case, please contact me and I’ll work to resolve it. And, while I tried to make sure I was analyzing as many marketing blogs as possible (I probably looked at close to 300), I’m sure I missed many great ones that deserve to be included. So, please also feel free to contact me and suggest a blog for the Power 150.
Those bloggers ranked in the Power 150 can find display graphics to grab at the bottom of the Power 150 page. I have a small graphic in the sidebar of my blog, so the list can be easily accessed at any time. I hope you can use this as a tool for referencing and browsing the top marketing blogs in America. Congratulations to all those who made the list!
UPDATE: By the way, I was inspired to create the Power 150 after stumbling onto the Marcom Top 100, a list of the top Dutch-language marcom blogs. Unfortunately, I don’t speak Dutch.
UPDATE (01/14/07): Please note that new blogs are being added as they are brought to my attention and run through the calculator. That said, you may notice slight ranking shifts. Ultimately, this will be a living, breathing ranking, so it will be common for rankings to adjust from time to time. As new blogs are added, it will, unforunately, push others off the list. Instead of just dropping them off the chart, I’ve created a continuation list for former Power 150-listed blogs and future honorable mentions. That list can be accessed by clicking the “see more” button after No. 150 spot.
UPDATE (03/19/07): The Power 150 is now a global ranking thanks to automation from TechBrew.
UPDATE: The Power 150 is now hosted with Advertising Age magazine - adage.com/power150.

Wow, Todd. Very impressive! Thanks for taking the time to put this together, that must have taken a ton of time!
Todd,
Wow…this must have one of those “it took 10 times as long as I thought it would” jobs! Thank you for making the time to create such a great tool for people to use.
I’m honored to be among these remarkable, witty, smart people!
Best,
Drew
Ok, so I think we’ve got some adding to do. Don’t forget servantofchaos.com, masiguy.blogspot.com, mpdailyfix.com, beyondmadisonavenue.com, moviemarketingmadness.com, telltenfriends.com, and I’m sure we’ll keep coming with more…
#74?
Not bad, I say.
Surely you saw Strumpette’s list of top PR blogs? Surprisingly enough, she made the top of the list, but then had to replace herself with Todd Defren. Then replaced Todd Defren with Chris Abraham. Good stuff.
I’m flattered to even be on this list. I guess my only problem is my blog isn’t really a marketing blog. Neither are a lot of the blogs on here, though.
Thanks the same; it’s an honor!
Where do you find all the extra time anyway, Todd?
Cheers,
Owen
Thanks, Paul, Drew and Owen. I’ll just say that having a laptop and wireless connection comes in handy when your wife insists on watching the first three seasons of Gilmore Girls every night after work… and on the weekends (and that you join her).
I needed a project to keep me busy. Owen, I tried lean on the flexible side when determining what was a marketing-related blog. Keep in mind that these are blogs related to the promotional P spanning PR, advertising, direct, internet, etc. I did see Strumpette’s list… great list and definitely another resource I’m using.
Hi Paul, thanks for the heads up on new blogs. I really enjoy servantofchaos.com, but that is an Australia-based blog, isn’t it? As for the others, I’ll definitely put those through the calculator as soon as possible. Thanks again!
Great list! Happy to be in it!
Ah, yes, you are correct. I can’t sneak anything by you!
Todd,
Thank you very much for taking the time to put this together during Gilmore Girls viewing (I understand - I do the same thing when my husband and boys are watching sports). I am truly thrilled to find my blog CustomersRock! in your top 150.
You rock!
As I mentioned to Paul of Hee Haw, I’m a little burnt out on lists, but I have to admire the effort that went into this. Wow—it is impressive.
I’ve covered it briefly here:
http://darmano.typepad.com/logic_emotion/2007/01/le_links_for_01.html
Wow Todd, this must have taken FOREVER! Shows you what we could all accomplish if we gave up TV watching. Nice to be included.
Stephen, Becky, and Kami - thanks for the positive feedback. It feels good to know that the work I put into this is appreciated.
David, you’re right, given all the end-of-the-year lists, January should officially be recognized on all calendars as List Burnout Month.
One word: Wow!
“It’s a thrill to be nominated …” But winning is better. Thanks for the inclusion, I’m honored to amongst ya.
(Impressive effort and execution!)
A good friend of mine and communications colleague worked with Lego at the Lego Serious Play methodology — your blog reminds me of him. He now consults at http://www.thinkwithyourhands.com.
I love your layout ad clean lines and before I saw David Armano’s post I had no idea something this comprehensive could be made look so easy to visualize. Kudos and grazie mille!
When I was developing the Power 150 I knew some (ok many) blogs would fall through the cracks. I just did my first round of new additions - adding six more quality blogs. Instead of just dropping the bottom six off the charts, I’ve created a continuation list for former Power 150 blogs and future honorable mentions. I’ll try to keep the list current with updates as they’re brought to my attention and as I have time.
Todd — Thanks for compiling this awesome list! I really appreciate what you’ve done here and the multimetric sources you’ve used to create the Power 150. We’re so thrilled to make the cut and at #61 no less!
Thanks,
Viaspire - Define. Innovate. Maximize.
Hi Todd, I love the Power 150. Terrific analysis — first time I’ve seen anything like it (other than the simplistic ones like the Technorati rank).
Of course, I’m thrilled to be on the list but more than that, all of us (including some who didn’t make it) will know exactly how the rank was created. Also great that you used the subjective measure. Often that aspect is missing.
Cheers, David
Very impressive, Todd! I know you said you would be updating it when you have time, but I hope that you are able to make it something more regular in that it can then become something relied upon. Not that most of us are into rankings (esp me as I am off your list
), but it sometimes helps to give us a sense of where the shifts in buzz are occurring and why.
Todd - Fantastic work here. This is a resource we can all share with others. The addition of the feed for each site is great. I’ve added several new reads because of it.
Wouldn’t it be great if someone put all these in one feed? Thanks for putting this together.
Thanks, Gavin. Servant of Chaos is definitely on my personal list of favorites and didn’t make the decision to focus strictly on US-based blogs any easier. Keep up the great work. As for the Power 150, I’m certainly going to try and update it as regularly as possible. I’m all about documenting buzz shifts.
Mike, David and Heather D - I’m pumped that you like the list. Thanks for the kind words. Just the fact that so many marketing bloggers have discovered other, new marketing bloggers has already made this all worth the time and effort. There were several times while creating the list that I thought “Wow! There are a lot of great marketing blogs out there that I had no clue existed.” It sounds like this list is making others think that too.
Todd,
Wow, I’m number 70! Thank you for including me in this incredible list. Lists are good and bad and we all kind of whine about them from time to time, but… it’s always a point of pride to be included on one.
I guess I have to thank folks like Paul, Gavin and Becky for mentioning my blog. The next time you’re calculating, I’d be curious to see how my other blog measures up;
http://bicyclemarketingwatch.blogspot.com
(Shameless self promotion… I know…)
Oh yeah, and since I’m a techno-idiot… how do I ad the graphic to my Blogger site?
Hmmm…
Todd,
Awesome work here…the blog needs more of you to help filter out the diamonds from the coal…I love your multi-variant anlysis approach including the Tod factor.
I’d love to borrow the template from you so I could do this same type of list for Canada (where I hail form).
Kudos again
Todd:
Great work. This is wonderful how you’ve been able to put this into a neat & tidy list. Thanks for all of your hard work.
Chris
I don’t get it, how is Joseph Jaffe and Jaffe Juice not way up there?
Does not make sense to me.
Hi Todd
Here is marketallica
is it top 150?
http://www.marketallica.wordpress.com
Thanks, Sean… you’re more than welcome to use the template for a Canadian version. Let me know when you’re finished, so I can be sure to link to it.
Thanks, Chris. Neat and tidy is always a good thing these days.
You’re absolutely right, Mitch. Jaffe Juice has been added to the list and, as you can see, it was a gross oversight. The Juice ranks No. 10 currently! Thanks for bringing that to my attention.
Ozgur - thanks for stopping by. I’m very familiar with your Marketallica and, according to my calculations, as of now, it would definitely be in the top 150 - in the 70s.
Nice work. I’ve bookmarked the page so I can come back and explore some blogs I haven’t discovered yet.
[you're not getting tired of people saying "great job" yet, are you?]
– Ron
Hi Todd,
Good to see that we inspired you to make the Power 150! We use the Google Pagerank, votes from our visitors and our personal score for the blogs to make the ranking of the dutch Marcom top100 (http://www.marketingfacts.nl/marcom100/) .Although you don’t understand dutch you might have notice that we had some discussions about the Google Pagerank. Not every server gives the same result, so at this time we’re testing a script that checks a lot of servers and gives the maximum pagerank as the result. So I wonder what kind of script you’re using to get the pagerank of Google.
Together with bommie.com (a dutch rss-service) we also have a special Marcom top100 rss-feed for our visitors and for displaying the latest headlines of the blogs in the actual top100. Maybe a good added for your list too
Todd:
Well, I’m glad that I sent you our blog and thrilled to see that we wound up at 49! It was great to read so many blogs that I didn’t know before. It’s really helpful to get some idea of how the rankings were developed too. I can’t even imagine how much time this took, so thanks for all of the hard work!
Todd: I got a 13 out of 15 on the TAIndex! Thanks — always good to make the list, whatever the list is. I enjoy your site and will put your logo up on mine shortly —
S. Denny
Note to CMO
An impressive amount of work. I was glad just to make the list. As you probably know, I took some time off, but I posted earlier today. Have a look when you get a chance. I’d love to get your take on “basic assumptions.” Great job on the list!
Maybe you could give me a hand. Somehow, I managed to misspell my own name on the last comment. I think I took too long a break!
I believe Brian Clark’s “hmmm” means copyblogger.com should probably be added…
Paul, actually, that hmmm meant…
“Did I leave the stove on?”
Brian - regardless of whether you left the stove on or not, you have been added to the ranking.
Thank you so much for putting this together. wow!
an impressive amount of research. I am impressed, and thrilled to be on your list!

Todd,
Very way cool job on putting this list together and I’m flattered to be included. Many thanks.
[...] One the other hand, the fantastic thing (potentially) about the blogosphere is the volume and diversity of opinion. thanks for dont include me
Hey Todd, great list to be sure, as I mentioned I like the fact that your using numerous data points that are somewhat qualitative. That being said, you might want to give the google page rank a bit more weight as it is amazingly hard to move up in google pagerank, and to have page ranks of 4 in the same running as 6’s and 7’s is just not really right in my mind.
Hey Karl, thanks. Both Google Page Rank and Technorati rankings are determined by link analysis, so I didn’t think giving Google more weight was necessary. Combined, Technorati and Google Page Rank account for more than half the value in the Power 150 algorithm.
Todd,
What a great list! I am discovering some new marketing blogs I didn’t know before (including yours!). In case you didn’t include my blog in the analysis, please take a look to see if it should be on your list:

Gotcha, Karl. I’ll fix that asap. Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for including me! I’m certainly humbled. I noticed the rankings have changed since yesterday. Do you intend for this to be a fluid list?
Whoops … just missed your update. I see you are making changes! Keeps the pressure on us to keep up the content.
[...] I was truly humbled — and, to be honest, very surprised — to learn yesterday afternoon that Todd Andrlik’s Power 150 list had ranked Bryper.com 93rd best among all US blogs covering marketing topics. And just to make sure that the honor didn’t go to my head, Todd’s knocked me down a few notches to the 97th spot later in the day as part of his efforts to keep the list current and include new blogs that he discovers. [...]
Hey Bryan, I do intend for the list to be as fluid as possible. Since the Power 150 launched last Thursday, I’ve had a wave of about 20 requests for inclusion. So, when you see your ranking change it is NOT because I’m upset with you and reduced your Todd And Points!
It’s just more blogs being added. When you feel your own numbers have changed significantly, just let me know and I’ll recalculate to see if you’ve climbed up a few spots. Moving forward, I hope to periodically check all blogs on the list to make sure it portrays the most accurate ranking possible.
Thanks, Lauren. I appreciate the offer to help keep it updated. The only help I need now is for people to keep me posted with updates to their own blogs (and keep in mind that I’ll try to make the update as soon as humanly possible, but I am only human). If anyone has any ideas for automating this list, I’m all ears!

Great blog post and excellent viral marketing device. Wow, I actually got listed in one of these blog lists.
To me PR is part of marketing so reviewing both the PR and marketing communities makes sense.
Hey Todd,
I couldn’t view the image. Broken. Maybe it’s just me.
Todd,
Congratulations on putting together such a great resource!
And on another note, dude…Gilmore Girls? I’m sorry.
Todd:
Very nice job, and thanks for showing the ongoing comittment. I see several of my favorites on your list, and a ton of potential favorites!
Two that you may want to analyze are Mike Wagner’s Own Your Brand blog (www.ownyourbrand.com) and Olivier Blanchard’s Brand Builder Blog (thebrandbuilder.blogspot.com) …unless I’m just not seeing them, which is entirely possible at my age!
